I think guns, cannon and knives (aka: Arms) are tools more than anything else and that, as with any other tool or material, the entire responsibility for their use or misuse lives exclusively with the individual owners of those tools.
I also think there are exceptionally good reasons that our founders enshrined the right of people in the US to own such tools.
I also think that both sides of our mainstream media are gaslighting us on the “issue of guns” by not allowing ANY position but the two most extreme and divisive to gain any traction. The media (both “sides”) actively silence anyone pointing to ANY factor other than guns being a driving force in mass shootings.
They don’t talk at all about the insane increases in wealth inequality where a couple of hundred folks own more wealth than the other 90% of citizens.
They don’t talk at all about the wage inequality between CEOS and ordinary workers (Who are the ACTUAL wealth creators by their work, but see virtually none of the benefits) we’ve seen grow over the past 40 years from ~30:1 to >300:1 .
They don’t talk at all about the massive increase of citizens being dumped in our gutters to live or die since Reagan first shuttered California mental hospitals as a response to citizens demanding reforms.
They don’t talk at all about bullying and the utterly FUBAR response of our schools where kids are punished for standing up to people who understand only superior FORCE along with the will to apply it.
The simple Fact is that folks who aren’t pushed to the absolute edge don’t just randomly start killing their fellow citizens, yet because this is a difficult facet to attack (which would require something akin to a new New Deal) they focus exclusively on guns as being “The Problem.” What we ordinary citizens get is a form of gaslighting called Limiting The Debate where one side screams that “Guns are the problem!” and the “other” side screams “Paws off my guns!” when the reality is that all of these other factors play into the problem far more than the number of guns or the percentage of citizens owning guns.
In point of fact we’ve watched the percentage of families owning guns plummet 34 basis points from 47% of households in 1973 to just 31% in 2014.
Were a sane person to look at the assertion against the real life numbers, one would expect that if guns themselves were actually the root cause of these folks nutting up, the numbers would track in some way, yet we see the exact opposite trend with these incidents increasing by several orders of magnitude (once in 8000 days to now when they’re every 30 to 60 days) even as the percentage of families owning guns plummeted.
In fact according to a 2016 study nearly half of the guns in the US are owned by just 3% of the population. Nearly Half Of Guns In U.S. Owned By 3 Percent Of Population, Study Finds
The interesting thing here is that these folks seem to be the LEAST likely to just nut up and start shooting.
The other interesting thing is that virtually all of these shooters were under som form of mental health treatment and had been either bullied or ostracized or both. Yet none of the media wants to talk about our fucking sick joke of a health “care” system which ignores mental health care as if it were a red headed stepchild and treats everyone as if we should all just hand over our entire damn wallet to them. Obama’s TRUE legacy
What’s been increasing since Bonzo’s breakfast buddy was governor? Untreated mental illness (especially in men) and the numbers of people dumped in our gutters to live or die as their luck permits.
Here’s some of the other things which have increased in line with the increased frequency of mass shootings..
Our damned congresscritters ignoring what we citizens need to service their bribers.. Corruption is legal.. For the wealthy ONLY.
The wars for profit..
Where did that estimated to become $6 Trillion go? Not to ordinary citizens!
Heinlein once said “Never try to take anything from a man who feels he has nothing left left to lose.. He may just kill you.”
There’s another gent who echoed that fact not too long ago..
THESE are the patterns we need to shift and reverse and “attacking the problem” by banning or *cough* controlling the TOOL will do exactly fuck all to actually reduce these mass killings.
Ignoring these patterns and pointing at “Guns are THE problem!” is directly equivalent to going to the ER for a raging leg infection and demanding antibiotics, while also demanding that the doctor ignore the end of your femur sticking out of your thigh.
